Newly uploaded this week is Phoenix, a riches-to-rags and rags-to-riches story of a woman who falls then rises again like the proverbial firebird. Lee Ji Eun (Lee Eun Joo), a woman from a wealthy family, defies her parents’ wishes to marry poor student Jang Sae Hoon (Lee Seo Jin). Unable to handle the burdens of poverty, she succumbs to her family’s pressure and divorces him. Heart-broken, her husband leaves for the U.S., and the two don’t see each other again until Sae Hoon returns to Korea as a wealthy, self-made businessman, and runs into her again, now a lowly domestic helper. Will Sae Hoon ever be able to forgive her?
Lee Seo Jin, star of hits such as Yi San, Lovers, and Damo, won Best Couple with Lee Eun Joo (a movie star for films such as The Scarlet Letter and Love’s Concerto) for their vivid chemistry in this drama, and Eun Joo also won best actress for her nuanced portrayal of a spoiled woman who is beaten down by life’s tragedies and re-emerges as a strong, independent individual. Co-starring Eric Mun (of Shinwha) and Jung Hye Young, it was an instant hit, pulling in average ratings of over 25%. Beautifully shot and acted, Phoenix is an intense drama that burns as brightly as the love of its fated couple, and resembles Titanic in its tale of two people bound together in an epic, star-crossed fate.
