GQ’s new issue features “The 100 Sexiest Women of the 21st Century,” led by cover model Beyonce. But a few of the women inside are singled out by their ethnicity, including Zhang Ziyi (“Hottest Chinese Chick”), Freida Pinto (“Hottest Indian Chick”), and M.I.A (“Hottest Pregnant Sri Lankan”). Although women such as Jessica Simpson, Kim Kardashian and Katie Holmes are presented without specifying their ethnicity, some readers are confused about the intent of highlighting the ethnicity of only some of the 21st century’s “Sexiest Women.”
It would be one thing if beautiful women from every country were highlighted equally, as in some beauty pageants. However, Professor Ruth C. White, Ph.D., says that “by calling out certain women’s ethnicity and not others, what they’re implying is that these women are not beautiful simply because they’re beautiful; they’re only attractive within the context of their own ethnicity.”
What do you think about GQ labeling only some of their “Sexiest Women” by ethnicity?
