by davidhou in Korean Drama on Apr 1, 2010

Often spoken of as the best Korean drama of 2002, Ruler of Your Own World aired to initially low ratings, gradually building up a dedicated, passionate fanbase  over the course of its 20 episodes. Critically praised for its daring realism and refusal to rely on Kdrama conventions, this gripping drama comes from the pen of the award-winning In Junk Ok and from veteran director Park Sung Soo, and boasts top-notch quality in everything from its cast to its plot and music. Garnering a huge devoted following, Ruler of Your Own World became a genuine cult classic, and gave rise to several current A-list actors.

Great Casting and Fine Dining Serve Up Romance in PASTA

by davidhou in Korean Drama on Mar 11, 2010

Much-loved actors Lee Sun Gyun (Coffee Prince, Triple) and Gong Hyo Jin (Thank You, Hello My Teacher) light up the screen with their chemistry in this bubbly, addicting story of an acerbic master chef and a stubborn, warm-hearted kitchen assistant who fall in love. Feel-good and well-produced, wonderfully detailed in its creation of the specific world of a pasta restaurant, Pasta is characterized by a warm vibe reminiscent of both chick flick classics such as You’ve Got Mail and 2007′s drama smash hit The First Shop of Coffee Prince. Alex of uber-popular band Clazziquai, Honey Lee of 2009′s Partner, and a host of hilarious, good-looking supporting actors round out the cast.

Upcoming Dramas: PASTA and PICK THE STARS

by Claire in Korean Drama on Jan 2, 2010

pasta_poster_smallWith the end of 2009 and the beginning of a new year, we’ve got a whole new roster of dramas to look forward to in the coming months. First among them is two dramas which look to be lighter fare premiering on January 4th: the food-oriented Pasta and the single-mom romcom Pick the Stars. While there’s higher-profile dramas approaching (and much anticipated medical sageuk Jejoongwon premiers on the same day), I wanted to highlight these two to make sure they get their proper share of attention in the swirl and bustle of an all-new year.

New images and info are pouring in about the upcoming drama Pasta, starring Gong Hyo Jin and Lee Seon Kyun. Although not too much has been revealed about the plot, we know that it’s set in an Italian restaurant where Gong‘s character is struggling to become a great chef. After a slew of promo shots were released, we now have the official posters, and stories of frigid shooting conditions (complementing the frigid relationship between the two main characters nicely). You can even check out the trailer–which looks a bit like a romantic reincarnation of Top Chefhere.

The huge end-of-the-year musical extravaganzas are about to hit Korean tv, and you can check out the kpop-studded lineups for MBC right here. Trying desperately to out do MBC will be the SBS music festival–and here‘s the lineup–hosted by You’re Beautiful‘s Park Shin Hye and Jung Yong Hwa. Along with a “myster[ious] and shocking” surprise performance, the SBS special will reportedly include a faux wedding ceremony between Park Shin Hye and Lee Seung Ki!

Lee Seung Ki‘s proposal tops a very busy year for the Brilliant Legacy star–he was just voted by KBS viewers as one of the 2009′s most active celebrities!

In other awards news, Ko Hyun Jung, of the recently departed Queen Seon Duk, received top honors on 10asia’s list of Top 10 People of 2009.

It was a bloody Xmas for Kim Hyun Joong (Boys Over Flowers), who after spending part of his Christmas with SS501 bandmate Young Saeng, hopped online to invite his fans to join him playing the online sniper game Sudden Attack.

Kim Bum (BOF) will appear in romantic-goth-on-moving-day mode in January’s Vogue Girl, but you don’t have to wait to see him putting together a bed–just click here!

snowman_newsToday’s Ten Days of DramaFever has all 17 episodes of Snowman uploaded, a tale of forbidden love and the choices that arise in the face of tragedy.

Suh Yeon-Wook (Gong Hyo Jin) first meets Detective Han Pil-seung (Jo Jae Hyun) when she is dragged into the police station after getting into a fight with some girls. The two end up trading insults and Yeon-Wook leaves certain that she’ll never see him again. To her horror, her sister, Yon-Jung, tells her that she’s engaged to Pil-seung. Yeon-Wook reluctantly agrees to the marriage.

Over the course of time, however, the two get over their differences and develop a close, warm relationship. But things take an unexpected turn when Yeon-Wook realizes that her feelings for her brother-in-law are more than friendship or sisterly affection…

Meanwhile, Cha Sung-joon, an old friend of Yeon-wook’s and the son of a rich hotel owner, watches from the sidelines, in love with Yeon-wook himself but aware of her feelings for Pil-seung. Yeon-Wook eventually decides to forget Pil-seung  and begins dating Cha Sung-joon. Then her sister suddenly dies, and Yeon-wook is faced with a terrible decision, torn between love and duty, the memory of her sister and her own desires.

Gong Hyo-Jin, famous for her roles in much-loved dramas Thank You and Hello My Teacher, brings a nuanced passion to her role is this earlier drama, and Jo Jae Hyun, lead of recent successful drama New Heart, provides a good counterpart as the detective she falls for who slowly begins to realize that his sister-in-law loves him. With an unconventional storyline and a compelling plot, Snowman is not a drama to be missed.
