Kim Nam Gil poses for Elle Korea

He’s a Bad Man. And by that, I mean he’s great. Kim Nam Gil has recently caught the attention of the media and fans alike after his scene stealing performance in the 2009 historical drama Queen Seon Duk. His bad boy attitude, and boy-next-door charm gave the epic new life, pulling in views, and stealing the hearts of drama watchers the world over. His skilled acting in Queen Seon Duk landed him not one, not two, but three awards: Best Newcomer at the 46th Baeksang Awards, and Male Excellence and Best Couple Awards (with Lee Yo Won) at the 2009 MBC Drama Awards. Not bad. Not bad at all. But, you may be asking yourself, “Newcomer? Haven’t I seen him before?” And you’d be right.

The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is now hosting “Chaotic Harmony” – The first major exhibition in the United States of photographs made by contemporary Korean artists presently living in South Korea. Bringing together work by 40 contemporary photographers, this presentation of 42 large-scale images examines a range of contemporary issues. DramaFever has contributed to the multimedia aspect of the exhibit with four classic Korean drama titles: Queen Seonduk, Coffee Prince, Jewel In The Palace and IRIS.

Bae Doo Na

Kim Young Hyun and Park Sang Yeon, the writing team who most recently brought Queen Seon Duk to TV screens, will reunite to adapt the 2006 best-selling novel A Tree With Deep Roots. Tree is set during the prosperous reign of King Sejong, who famously invented the modern Korean alphabet, and involves the murders of a group of scholars protected by the King. We’ll have to wait until next year to see what is expected to be a lavish production, although casting begins next month.

Lee Da Hae reflects on the ups and downs of shooting her hit Chuno in a new interview. Remember the fuss over her cleavage, and then the bigger fuss when editors blurred it out? She still thinks it was all much ado about nothing. In hindsight, she’s also able to brush off criticism of her physical appearance and perhaps historically incongruous wardrobe choices. What’s next? Lee’s looking forward to taking a break, and then she seems set on acting in Hollywood.

Jewel in the Palace’s Lee Young Ae was spotted at a basketball game with what fans are assuming is her husband. Oddly, the first photos cover her man’s face in mosaic, but the last pic gives a good shot of the man in her life.

Won Bin teamed up again with Mother director Bong Joo Ho for a commercial for Max beer. Check out the behind the scenes pics, and then see the finished spot right here.

Bae Doo Na opens up on her approach to the surreal drama Air Doll in a new interview. She says that the role of an inflatable doll come to life was unusually challenging–not only because of the nudity involved and the bizarre nature of the plot, but also because she had to “empty” herself every day in preparation for the role as a completely innocent being. The film opened last week in Korea after a strong run in Japan. In describing his latest drama, director Hirokazu Kore-eda said, “Inflatable dolls exist only when inflated by others. And our relationships are pretty much the same. We only exist when we relate to others.”

For the longest time, what is now known as Hallyu (Korean Wave) had mostly been confined to the realms of TV dramas, movies and music, not surprisingly generating an increasingly significant crossover between the three media, phenomenon which slowly but surely broke age old taboos, like that of film directors producing for television, and viceversa. Largely and perhaps unfairly ignored was what has been one of the most fascinating success stories in all of Korean entertainment, domestically produced documentaries like Tears of the Amazon (아마존의 눈물).
